🌞 Choosing the right time to visit Damajagua Waterfalls can make the difference between seeing crystal-clear turquoise waterfalls or finding a river closed due to flooding. Being in the Caribbean, the climate is tropical, but the mountain has its own rules.

Here we break down the seasons so you can decide which one is best for you.
1. High and Dry Season (December to April)
This is, for many, the best time to visit.
- Weather: Fresh temperatures (for the Caribbean) between 20°C (68°F) and 28°C (82°F).
- The Water: The river is usually lower, which means the water looks a spectacular turquoise or emerald blue.
- Downturn: This is the peak tourist season. Being cruise ship season and winter vacations in the north, the Monument is usually very crowded between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
- Tip: Arrive at 8:30 AM to avoid the crowds.
2. Rainy Season (May to November)
Don’t let the name scare you off, but be cautious.
- Weather: Much more heat and humidity (up to 33°C / 91°F). The dip in the river feels incredible.
- The Water: The waterfalls roar with more force. The slides are faster and more exciting.
- Risk of Closure: The park is more likely to close totally or partially due to rain in the mountains. September and October are the months with the highest risk of tropical storms.
- Tip: Always have a “Plan B” (like visiting Puerto Plata’s Historic Center) in case the river is closed.
3. Month by Month Summary
- January - March: Perfect weather, little rain. Ideal for photography.
- April - June: The heat begins. The flow is moderate and crowds decrease slightly (except during Easter).
- July - August: Very hot. Ideal for cooling off in the water. Local school vacation period; weekends are usually very busy.
- September - October: Low tourist season. You can have the river almost to yourself, but there is a higher risk of rain.
- November - December: The weather begins to cool down. November rains are frequent on the north coast of the DR.
4. The “Cruise Ship” Factor
Regardless of the month, there is one golden rule: the cruise ship schedule. Puerto Plata has two ports (Amber Cove and Taíno Bay). If there are 3 large cruise ships on the same day, Damajagua will receive thousands of people in a few hours.
- Tip: Search for “Puerto Plata Cruise Port Schedule” online before choosing your visit day. If you see a day with “0 ships” or only 1 small ship, that’s your ideal day!
5. Days of the Week
- Monday to Friday: The best days for a quiet experience.
- Saturdays and Sundays: Local tourism days. Dominicans love their rivers, and on weekends Damajagua fills with local groups with music and lots of energy. Go on the weekend only if you like a festive atmosphere and are not in a hurry.
Final Verdict
If you are looking for the perfect balance between good weather, crystal-clear water, and safety, March and April are the winning months.
