Frequently Asked Questions
Here we answer the most common questions about 27 Waterfalls and Damajagua Waterfalls. If you don't find your answer, please email us at info@27waterfalls.org.
Where exactly are the Damajagua Waterfalls?
They are located in the municipality of Imbert, in the Puerto Plata province, in the northern part of the Dominican Republic. They are about 10 km (15-20 min) from the Amber Cove cruise terminal and about 28 km (35-40 min) from the center of Puerto Plata.
What is the difference between the 7, 12, and 27 waterfalls?
The number indicates how many waterfalls or pools you will visit. The 7-waterfall tour is the most common and suitable for almost everyone. The 27-waterfall tour requires a much longer hike (approx. 1 hour uphill) and excellent physical condition.
Is it mandatory to go with a guide?
Yes, absolutely. For safety reasons and the preservation of the natural monument, river access is not allowed without a certified guide from the center and properly fitted safety equipment (helmet and life jacket).
What is the minimum age for children?
For the first 7 waterfalls, the minimum recommended age is 8 years. To complete the full 27 waterfalls, the minimum age is usually 12 years. These ages may vary depending on the river's flow and the guides' decisions on the day of the visit.
Do I need to be an expert swimmer?
It is not strictly necessary to be an expert swimmer, as a life jacket is mandatory and will keep you afloat at all times. However, you should feel comfortable in the water, as there will be sections where you cannot touch the bottom and will have to swim short distances.
What type of footwear should I use?
You must wear closed-toe shoes with a non-slip sole. "Water shoes" or old sneakers that you can get wet are best. Loose sandals or flip-flops are NOT allowed in the river due to the risk of falls and losing your shoes.
Are there lockers available?
Yes, the visitor center has lockers for rent. We recommend leaving your dry clothes, wallet, and keys there. Only take things to the river that are waterproof or in a certified waterproof case.
What happens if it rains on the day of my tour?
If the rain is light, the activity continues normally. If there is heavy rain at the river's headwaters that dangerously increases the flow, the center may close certain waterfalls or the entire monument for safety. Visitor safety is always the priority.
I'm coming on a cruise (Amber Cove / Taino Bay), do I have time to go?
Yes, it is one of the most popular excursions for cruise passengers. However, it is vital to book a tour that guarantees a timely return to the port. The total duration from pickup to return is usually 5 to 6 hours.
Are people with medical conditions permitted?
The activity is not recommended for pregnant women, people with recent surgeries, severe back or neck problems, or heart conditions. The tour involves hiking on uneven terrain and the impact of jumping into the water.
How long does the entire tour last?
The 7-waterfall tour lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours (including the initial hike). The full 27-waterfall tour can take between 4 and 5 hours depending on the group's size and agility.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
Only if it is waterproof (like a GoPro) or if you have a high-quality waterproof case that hangs from your neck or arm. Guides sometimes offer to take photos, but always at your own risk in case of loss or damage.
Is food available on site?
Yes, there is a buffet restaurant serving typical Dominican food (rice, beans, stewed chicken, salad). Most tours purchased online already include this lunch in the price.
What is the best month to visit?
From January to June, the water usually has very good visibility and the weather is pleasant. In the fall (October-December), there is usually more rain, which sometimes forces the closure of river sections, although the waterfalls look more spectacular then.
How can I book my spot?
We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance through our [Tours](/tours/) section to ensure availability, especially if you are coming during high cruise season.
